Applicants must hold an offer of study at The University of Manchester before applying for this funding. The PhDs funded by the AXA scheme must fall into one of the following areas

Application procedure
An application must include:
- A detailed description of the PhD project (maximum of 4 pages)
- A detailed CV
- Two letters of recommendation:
- 1 st letter by the applicant¿s PhD supervisor, which should include:
- An engagement to supervise the PhD candidate
- Information about the excellence of the research environment offered by the institution (international reach, academic networks, details of the research facilities, etc)
- The number of PhD candidates to be supervised by the supervisor during the fellowship
- 2 nd letter, preferably by the applicant¿s Master¿s thesis advisor if applicable
- 1 st letter by the applicant¿s PhD supervisor, which should include:
- Additional materials illustrating the applicant¿s research (maximum of 20 pages) to include a summary of thesis, abstracts of any publications or releases and a schedule for proposed project
Additional documentation
Candidates are required to submit one paper copy and one electronic copy of their application.

Selection criteria
The selection process is in two stages, internal and external.
Internal
Faculties will select the outstanding candidates and rank them based on their academic excellence and the relevance of their projects to the AXA research domains. One paper and one electronic copy will then be forward to the central Research Office. If more than two applications are received, a central committee involving Faculties Associate Deans will select the final two candidates to be submitted to AXA.
External
Once selected the names and email addresses of the two candidates will be submitted on the AXA online system. AXA will then email the candidates with a username and password to request that they complete an online form. Candidates will require the electronic version of their application to complete this process.
Candidates must complete and validate their online application form by Friday 15th April at the very latest.
Internal
